From Semiconductor Technology to Daoist Wisdom: Former Winbond VP Dr. Pai Pei-Lin Shares the Art of a Happy Life at Asia University
Bridging technology and the humanities, guiding students to meet challenges with wisdom and to explore the values that shape a meaningful life
Asia University today (October 29) hosted a special lecture, “The Daoist Art of Happiness,” featuring Dr. Pai Pei-Lin, former Vice President of Winbond Electronics. Drawing on the philosophies of Laozi and Zhuangzi and on years of experience in the high-tech industry, Dr. Pai guided faculty and students in exploring practical wisdom for facing life’s challenges and pressures. Moving beyond a purely technical frame, the talk invited reflection on career development and life attitudes through the humanities—an embodiment of Asia University’s commitment to integrating technology and the liberal arts.
Dr. Pai brings extensive experience in the semiconductor industry, having worked with leading technology companies at home and abroad and contributed to semiconductor R&D as well as corporate management. Beyond his technical expertise, he has long studied traditional Chinese culture, with a deep focus on Daoist philosophy, and has sought to bring classical thought into modern life and management—reflecting a cross-disciplinary outlook that unites professional excellence with humanistic literacy.
Under the theme “The Daoist Art of Happiness,” the lecture explored inner balance in a rapidly changing society through Laozi’s wisdom of living in harmony with nature and responding with flexibility, and through Zhuangzi’s philosophy of ease, equanimity, and transcending gain and loss. As artificial intelligence and the semiconductor sector advance at pace—with continuous innovation, intensifying competition, and mounting workplace pressure—students need more than technical skill alone: they also need adaptability, positive thinking, and the wisdom of self-regulation.
From the vantage point of semiconductor development, whether in advanced-process R&D, technological breakthroughs, or team leadership, success depends on lifelong learning, cross-domain collaboration, and resilience. The practical wisdom of Daoist thought offers technology talent a different lens—reminding students that while pursuing innovation and career achievement, they should also value physical and mental balance and life’s deeper meaning, and meet the future with a more open mind.
Asia University continues to advance semiconductor education and cross-disciplinary talent development—strengthening capabilities in semiconductor processes, packaging and testing, artificial intelligence, and related practice, while also nurturing students’ humanistic literacy, creative thinking, and career readiness. By inviting an expert with deep industry experience and humanistic insight, the University hopes students will see that outstanding technology professionals need not only solid expertise, but also strong psychological resilience, communication skills, and the wisdom to face challenges.
