ABOUT ORIGIN LABS
An African platform connecting research, industry and communities
Origin Labs starts with needs rooted in African communities, bringing together university research, industry partners and communities to explore practical innovations through interdisciplinary collaboration. Its physical hub in East Africa is hosted at Dedan Kimathi University of Technology in Kenya. The hub provides a setting for research, exchange and collaborative practice, connecting people from different disciplines around local challenges.
Three directions for innovation
01 Industry solutions
Starting with practical industry challenges and combining research and technical expertise to explore relevant applications.
02 Co-creation
Bringing researchers, industry and communities together to exchange perspectives, understand problems and develop ideas collaboratively.
03 Anticipatory research
Exploring future needs and technological possibilities with a longer-term perspective, building knowledge and approaches for further innovation.
Connecting learning with practice
Origin Labs emphasizes learning through real-world problems. Its Field Lab approach brings knowledge, hands-on work and teamwork into practical settings. This interdisciplinary approach connects talent development with the needs of industry and communities.
An interest in the semiconductor value chain
The organization’s presentation also outlines the Open Silicon Foundry Platform among its industry collaboration concepts, with a focus on the semiconductor value chain. The visit to Asia University’s Semiconductor Center and related laboratories provided an opportunity to learn about each other’s teaching and research strengths through an introduction to equipment and practical learning environments.
